Choosing the right substance or materials to design a product is a difficult and complex subject. It should be noted that there is no real substance that is resistant to the whole corrosive environments, and different materials in different environments show unpredictable reactions. Therefore, sometimes there is an extensive list of selectable materials in front of the design engineer, which makes choosing the best material very complicated.
The following are the steps of the material design and selection process:
- Determine construction considerations such as quantity, dimensions, surface quality, weight and complexity
- Compile a short list of suitable materials to use in the intended application
- Evaluate the selected materials in detailed form, and compare them in terms of efficiency, cost, availability and buildability.
